4. Natural Dyeing / Colouring
The spun yarn is hand-dyed at WoolWay Natural Dye Studio, located at 9 Kentronakan 3rd Street, Argavand 0805, Armenia.
Here, master wool dyer Mariam Nalbandyan artisans follow time-honoured Armenian dyeing traditions, using only natural pigments sourced from the local environment.
Each plant-based ingredient imparts its own distinctive tone:
-
Madder root yields deep reds and earthy terracottas
-
Walnut husks create rich browns and warm sepia tones
-
Onion skins produce soft golds and copper hues
-
Pomegranate rind gives muted yellows and olive greens
-
Chamomile and weld offer gentle straw tones
-
Indigo (when available) introduces shades of deep blue
These dyes are prepared using slow-extraction techniques and fixed with natural mordants such as alum and iron, ensuring both durability and environmental safety. The yarns are sun-dried, allowing the colours to settle with minimal energy input.
Each dye bath is influenced by the seasonality and condition of its ingredients, resulting in subtle, living variations that cannot be exactly replicated. These tonal differences are celebrated as part of the fibre’s identity, adding depth and individuality to each batch.
Every dyeing session is documented by date, artisan, plant source, and recipe, and recorded in the Digital Product Passport, creating an unbroken and verifiable record of colour provenance—anchoring each hue in the landscape and labour from which it emerged.
